Wouldn’t it bee cool if a lantern hung from your tuba bell, and lit your way in the dark?
This week I started making this happen.
Tuba lantern in progress.
First, I started making the lantern out of deconstructed bamboo steamers (the kind you use to make bao dumplings)…
A lamp harp…
Some Cardboard Uhaul boxes…
The handle of an Easter basket…
An LED light…
And of course, various hooks from the second hand store…
Then I stumbled upon this lantern at a second hand store, which I altered and which - at least temporarily - replaced the bamboo steamer.
Then... I stumbled on another, even lighter lantern at yet another thrift shop, which seems to hang beautifully from the tuba bell.
One of my tuba friends pointed out to me that, instead of the cardboard "hat" that I've created to attach to the tuba and support the bell, I could simply use a clamp that's gently altered to attach to the bell. I'm on the hunt for a clamp that's wide enough to work... if you've got one, drop me a line.
Of course, this is only the first iteration of the tuba lantern. Ultimately, the tuba lantern will play a major role in my stage show, Ha Ha Da Vinci. So, it needs to pack tight, be quick to assemble, and be lightweight enough that I can tour with it solo.
I’ll continue to reconstruct the current design to improve both its look and effectiveness. For now though, I’m looking forward to this lantern lighting the way.
